Debi K has been crocheting since her early teens. She had tried to learn crocheting much earlier, but no matter how hard her mother and grandmother tried to teach her, she just couldn't get it. Then one day, she picked up the crochet hook and some yarn and it was like she was born with the ability to crochet. There were no more questions about how to do it, it just worked. After making every thing and anything she could find a pattern for, Debi started designing her own patterns. It seemed that she could never find a pattern for what she wanted to make. Unfortunately, she didn't have the foresight to right down the instructions in the early years for the patterns she designed. And having given most of the projects away, she doesn't even have pictures to show of them.
While pregnant with her first son, (he's now 19), Debi decided to create a pattern for the purpose of selling the patterns. She was sitting at home waiting for the birth and thought this might just bring in some extra money. She studied the various crochet magazines and eventually placed a small word ad in one offering her one and only pattern for sale. It was a potpouri wall hanging. The ad cost a fortune but she tried it anyway. She sold 5 patterns. Discouraged, she set selling patterns aside, but continued crocheting and designing patterns. Again, not writing the instructions down.
Years later, when Debi was bored during the winter - not having as much to do with her horses, she started designing patterns for the equine industry. Wanting certain items herself for her horses, she discovered that no crochet designer that she could find, designed for this industry. And now with the use of the internet, advertising patterns for sale world-wide was so much simpler and much cheaper. Thus began the creation of the patterns and the websites to offer them for sale. Starting on ebay and a couple equestrian sites, Debi found the patterns were selling well. As a graphic artist, she is also able to design the written pattern and produce them herself, making it simple to promote and sell the patterns. Now 5 years after the start of this little venture, Debi has over 30 patterns - most equine related, but recently has started doing other projects as well. The pattern selection continues to grow and with it so do the sales. In the winter months, more patterns are created and completed than during the summer months. In the summer, Debi is too busy with the horses on the farm, teaching, riding and giving trail rides for the public. By the time she gets to the house, it's after dark and exhausted. In the winter, she's in the house by dark and cuddled up in front of the fire crocheting for the night.
